Cassim Chilumpha Joins Presidential Race as 15th Candidate Ahead of September Polls

Former Vice President Dr. Cassim Chilumpha has officially entered Malawi’s 2025 presidential race, becoming the 15th hopeful to collect nomination papers. Chilumpha, who leads the Assembly for Democracy and Development (ADD), collected his papers today, according to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Sangwani Mwafulirwa, MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, confirmed the development in a statement.

Other presidential contenders include Milward Tobias, Adil James Chilungo, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, Kondwani Nankhumwa, Akwame Bandawe, and Joyce Banda. Also in the race are Atupele Austin Muluzi, Reverend Hardwick Kaliya, Arthur Peter Mutharika, Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, Dalitso Kabambe, Kamuzu Walter Chibambo, Smart Swira, and David Mbewe.

Meanwhile, the MEC has reminded all aspiring candidates and political parties that the official submission of nomination papers for presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections will take place from July 24 to July 30, 2025.

The presidential election is scheduled for September 16, 2025.
