Police in Zambia’s Southern Province have arrested a 22-year-old woman for attempting to kill her newborn baby by throwing the infant into a pit latrine shortly after giving birth.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka has confirmed the incident, identifying the suspect as Ngula Nyambe from Namalimba Village under Chief Nalubamba’s jurisdiction in Namwala District.
According to Mr. Daka, the incident happened around 4:00 AM on July 1, 2025. Reports indicate that Nyambe had kept her pregnancy a secret from her family members. On the day of the incident, after experiencing labour pains, she reportedly asked her cousin to accompany her to the toilet.
“It is believed that after giving birth inside the toilet, the suspect threw the newborn baby into the pit latrine,” said Daka.
The cousin, upon noticing what had happened, quickly alerted the suspect’s mother, who then sought help from the village headman. A rescue operation was launched, and the baby was successfully retrieved alive from the pit latrine.
The infant was rushed to Namwala Central Hospital for medical attention, and police were notified of the incident.
Ngula Nyambe has since been arrested and is in police custody pending further investigations and possible court proceedings.
