Police in Blantyre have arrested four individuals for obstructing a police officer in the line of duty and insulting officers, in violation of Section 256(b) of the Penal Code.

According to South-West Region Police Deputy Spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa, the suspects have been identified as Maxwell Kabambe (46), Patrick Pillow (35), Martin Jumbe (36), and Kassim Chisakaniza (28).

The arrests have triggered unrest among vendors, who gathered at Blantyre Police Station demanding the immediate release of the market chairperson, whose name is among the arrested.

Although police have not officially confirmed the reason for his arrest, vendors who spoke on condition of anonymity allege that the market chairperson was detained for allegedly purchasing stolen goods.

The four suspects are currently in custody and expected to appear in court soon. Police have urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.
