The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Balaka has convicted and sentenced two men to prison with hard labour for robbery, following their guilty plea.

Public Relations Officer for Balaka Police Station, Gladson M’bumpha, has confirmed the development and identified the two as Isaac Dafutala, aged 21, and Witness Kayakaya, aged 27.

The two have been sentenced to 7 and 8 years, respectively, for robbing a man of his mobile phone and K3,000 in cash.

According to M’bumpha, the incident occurred on the night of June 27, 2025, at Andiamo Location in Balaka. The two men attacked Prince Maliro, stealing his valuables before attempting to flee.

However, Maliro’s cries for help alerted nearby residents, who gave chase and apprehended the suspects near the Nankhombe River before handing them over to police.

In delivering the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua Nkhono emphasized that the punishment should act as a deterrent to others who may contemplate engaging in criminal activities.“The court will not tolerate acts that threaten public safety and peace,” said Magistrate Nkhono.

Both convicts will serve their sentences at Zomba Central Prison.
