The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the hearing of the Form 4 certificate case involving the Deputy Leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Central Region, Alfred Gangata. The case will resume on a date to be announced.
Today, Gangata’s lawyers were expected to cross-examine the first state witness, Andrew Elia Phambala, a teacher who previously told the court that he was the one who wrote the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) exam in 2018.
In response to questions from Kalekeni Kaphale, one of the defense lawyers, Phambala told the court that the examination certificate he used had his photograph but bore the name of the defendant.
He also admitted that he agreed to sit the exam on Gangata’s behalf after being promised K4 million, an amount he described as substantial and difficult to refuse.
Chief Resident Magistrate Austine Banda adjourned the case following a request from the defense team, who said they required additional documentation from the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) in order to continue cross-examining the government witness.
