At least seven shops have been destroyed following a fire that broke out at Lubinga Market in Mzuzu City early Tuesday morning.
The affected shops were located along a stretch locally known as “The Devil Street” within the market premises.
Chairperson for the area, Fostino Banda, confirmed the incident, stating that the cause of the fire is not yet known.
“We called the fire department, but they arrived after everything had already burned. So we chased them,” Banda told reporters.
In the aftermath of the blaze, some traders also reported looting. Wezzie Chunda, a hardware shop owner, said she lost property worth over K2 million to thieves who took advantage of the chaos.
Mzuzu Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident to establish the cause of the fire and to track down suspected looters.
