Residents of Area 38 in Lilongwe on Saturday night assaulted and partially set on fire a man suspected of attempting to break into a house in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was spotted trying to break into a home during the night. The owner raised an alarm, prompting a chase that led to the suspect’s capture.

An angry mob descended on him and later dragged him to a spot popularly known as “Four Ways”  a place at the boundary of Area 38 and Area 24, known for mob justice incidents. There, they burned his legs and left him at the scene.

As of this morning, the man was still lying at the location, reportedly in pain but breathing.

Authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
