Police in Mangochi have observed a notable increase in the number of men reporting Gender-Based Violence (GBV), signaling a shift in long-standing societal silence influenced by stigma.
According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, a total of 39 male survivors came forward with GBV cases between January and June 2025, compared to 22 cases during the same period in 2024.
In a statement, Daudi explained that the reported cases involve physical abuse, spousal abandonment, and denial of conjugal rights, with many incidents occurring under the Chikamwini system where a man resides at his wife’s family home.
She attributed the rise in reporting to increased awareness campaigns, collaborative efforts with NGOs, and the presence of mobile courts, which have made justice more accessible and have helped hold perpetrators accountable.
Authorities have since encouraged the public to support male survivors, stressing the importance of confidential reporting and breaking harmful gender stereotypes surrounding GBV.
