A 22-year-old man from Mphanda Village, under Chief Kalindawalo in Petauke District, Zambia, has tragically died by suicide after allegedly facing social rejection in his community.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased, Isaac Banda, took his life on July 21, 2025, around 2:00 PM, by hanging himself from a 25-meter-tall tree in a village graveyard using his trousers.

According to police, Banda had returned from Petauke Turn-Off earlier that day and began exhibiting concerning behavior, including burning his clothes and attempting to harm himself in his house. His mother reportedly intervened, temporarily preventing the act.

When questioned about his actions, Banda is said to have told his mother and other villagers that he believed people in the village hated him and that he wanted them to be happy by ending his life.

He later fled from home and was spotted climbing a tree at the local graveyard. Despite efforts by community members to stop him, Banda hanged himself before they could intervene.

Police officers, accompanied by firefighters, visited the scene and retrieved the body. A physical inspection revealed no signs of foul play and confirmed the incident as a suicide.

Commissioner Mweemba said both police and family members have not suspected any criminal activity and burial arrangements have since been permitted to proceed.
