A total of 31 Malawians are among a group of individuals who have been arrested by Tanzania’s Immigration Department.
According to Vincent Haule, the head of the Immigration Department in Dar es Salaam, the Malawians were arrested on suspicion of residing in the country without proper documentation.
“It’s true, Ephraim Mkali. We have arrested 31 Malawians along with individuals from other countries. These people have been living in our country without valid documents, which poses a threat to our national security. We have opened cases against them,” said Haule.
The arrests took place between July 19 and 22, 2025, during a house-to-house operation conducted by the Immigration Department.
Some of the Malawians who spoke to Malawi24 said they were arrested while sleeping and were taken away at night, then loaded into vehicles.
Meanwhile, in Malawi, there are also many Tanzanian nationals conducting various businesses, particularly from the city of Mzuzu to the Mataifa Market in Nkhata Bay, where the presence of Tanzanians is notably high.
IT has also noted that in Mzimba District, some Tanzanian nationals are reportedly renting government-owned houses belonging to the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) in staff residential areas.
However, the Malawian Embassy in Tanzania says it is not aware of the mass arrest of Malawians.
