Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has officially withdrawn from the presidential race ahead of the upcoming elections.
Mwenifumbo was scheduled to submit his nomination papers today at 3:30 p.m., but the NDP has since announced a strategic shift in its political direction. According to the party’s deputy leader, Dr. Chikondi Mpokosa, the decision follows successful coalition talks with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and other political partners.
Dr. Mpokosa confirmed that the NDP will now support DPP leader Peter Mutharika, who is expected to submit his nomination papers this morning.
“The NDP believes in unity for the greater good of the nation,” said Dr. Mpokosa. “We are joining forces with like-minded parties to bring change and progress to Malawians.”
The development adds momentum to Mutharika’s campaign, as more parties consolidate support behind him in the lead-up to the elections.
