President Chakwera to Submit Presidential Nomination Today as Public Eyes Running Mate Choice

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who also leads the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), is expected to submit his presidential nomination papers today ahead of the September 2025 elections.
According to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Dr. Chakwera is scheduled to present his nomination letter at 1:30 PM this afternoon. The official nomination window, which opened last Wednesday, is set to close today at 4:00 PM.
As the President heads to MEC, Malawians are keenly waiting to know who he will pick as his running mate, with much speculation surrounding key figures within the party. Some of the prominent names being mentioned include Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, and Youth and Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda, among others.
Meanwhile, independent candidate Smart Swira is also expected to submit his nomination papers this morning at around 9:00 AM.
So far, about 18 aspiring presidential candidates have submitted their nomination papers to MEC since the process began.
