The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has confirmed the arrest of Shadreck Namalomba, former Commissioner of Customs and Excise at the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
In a statement released on Monday, ACB said Namalomba is suspected of facilitating the unlawful transfer and warehousing of banned Mukula logs to Elvis Freight and Cargo Services Limited, a company linked to businessman Noel Masangwi.
The statement, signed by ACB Senior Public Relations Officer Jacqueline Ngongonda, further alleges that Namalomba abused his public office for the benefit of Mr. Masangwi, contrary to established MRA customs procedures.
The Bureau says that between January and March 2015, Namalomba allegedly conspired with Masangwi to commit a felony by bypassing customs protocols, thereby enabling the illegal exportation of prohibited timber products.
Namalomba is expected to appear in court soon, where he will likely face charges of misuse of public office and conspiracy to commit a felony, according to ACB.
