The Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Calisto Khama Matumbi, the bodyguard of UTM president Dalitso Kabambe, following his arrest on Sunday for allegedly carrying a firearm to the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) during the presidential nomination process.

Matumbi is facing two charges   illegal possession of a firearm and violating electoral laws.

Presiding Magistrate Benjamin Chulu granted him bail upon payment of K100,000, with his surety bound to K500,000 in the event of his absconding.

During the hearing, the State requested to keep custody of the firearm. However, the court will make a determination on the matter once Matumbi presents relevant ownership documents.

The case has been adjourned to August 14, 2025, when Matumbi is expected to take plea.
