Police in Zomba have arrested 10 people and confiscated 131 liters of liquid fuel following a crackdown on illegal fuel possession in the city.
According to Sub Inspector Tionge Kayenda, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Region Police Headquarters, the arrests were made after the police received tips from the public regarding individuals keeping fuel in jerrycans without authorization.
Kayenda said Eastern Region detectives launched investigations based on the information, which led to the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the fuel.
“The suspects will soon appear before court to answer charges of failing to comply with requirements lawfully made by an authority under the Liquid Fuels and Gas Act, and possession of property suspected to have been unlawfully obtained,” said Kayenda.
Police have since thanked members of the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
