Malawi’s Vice President and Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu Party leader, Dr. Michael Usi, has alleged that one of his official escort vehicles the pilot or lead car that carries part of his security detail has been withdrawn from his convoy and handed over to “someone who is not the Vice President.”
Usi emphasized that the vehicle is government property and not a party asset, questioning why it would be diverted from its intended role of protecting the country’s second-in-command.
The remarks come as tensions escalate between Usi and the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), after he publicly accused some government officials of engaging in corruption and theft. MCP, through its spokesperson Dr. Jessie Kabwila, demanded that the Vice President apologise or present evidence to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
But Usi has flatly refused to apologise, insisting he is ready to testify in court if necessary.
“Even if they take away all my official vehicles and leave me to ride in a wheelbarrow, I will not have a problem. I grew up riding a pushbike. I eat from my own sweat, and I have no case to answer. What I hate is corruption and theft!” Usi declared.
The Vice President further warned that Malawians should know the government is now “full of thieves,” and said his fight is not against individuals but against the cancer of corruption that has plagued the nation.
