Malawi is mourning the death of Senior Chief Kachindamoto of Dedza, celebrated nationally and internationally for her decades-long fight against child marriage and her relentless advocacy for girls’ education.
Born Teleza Chidyaonga, Kachindamoto ascended to the chieftaincy in 2003, succeeding her brother, Samson Chidyawonga. She died yesterday on 13 August 2025 in Lilongwe, her third-born son, Brunoh Ndovi, confirmed.
President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera joined the nation in paying tribute, calling her “a true champion of girls’ rights” whose “legacy of service, courage, and dedication will continue to inspire Malawi.”
Former president Peter Mutharika also hailed her as a towering figure in the country’s traditional leadership. Writing on his Facebook page, he recalled her instrumental role in pushing for the 2015 Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act, which raised the legal marriage age to 18. Her strict enforcement of the law led to the annulment of thousands of child marriages and enabled many girls to return to school.
Chief Kachindamoto’s commitment extended beyond Malawi’s borders. As a partner in the UN Women’s HeForShe campaign, she showcased how traditional leaders could be at the forefront of gender equality. In just three years, she broke up 850 child marriages and banned harmful sexual initiation practices for young girls.
She leaves behind a legacy of courage, reform, and unwavering advocacy for the rights of Malawi’s daughters.
