Police in Thyolo have arrested four men suspected of being found in possession of scrap metal without proper authorization, amid growing concerns over theft of public infrastructure in the country.

Thyolo Police spokesperson Rebecca Kashoti said the arrests followed an operation in Magombo Village, under Traditional Authority Nchiramwera.

The suspects have been identified as Peter Chiwalo, 18, and Frank Bamusi, 20, both from Kaombe Village, Traditional Authority Bvumbwe, as well as Thomas Makhucha, 51, and Mathews Botomu, 21, from Lolo Village, Traditional Authority Nanseta, all in Thyolo District. They are expected to appear in court soon.

The arrests come as Malawi continues to grapple with increasing cases of theft involving ESCOM equipment, Water Board property, road signs, and even cemetery crosses, which are allegedly being stolen and sold as scrap metal.
