The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is facing internal pressure after one of its members, Kenneth Bwanali, issued a strong ultimatum to the party leadership over the continued absence of its presidential candidate, Professor Peter Mutharika, from the campaign trail.

In a letter addressed to the party, Bwanali expressed concern that while other presidential hopefuls are actively engaging voters ahead of the September elections, Mutharika has not been seen at major rallies or public events. He warned that the silence is damaging the party’s image and fueling public speculation.

Bwanali has demanded that within 24 hours, the DPP either ensure Mutharika makes a public appearance to address the nation or provide a clear explanation regarding his health status if medical issues are keeping him from campaigning.

“The strength of the party is built on the trust of its members and the Malawian people,” Bwanali said, stressing the need for transparency and urgency.

Bwanali, a prominent media personality and influential researcher, rejoined the DPP in June this year after leaving the United Transformation Movement (UTM). His return was seen as a boost to the party, citing Mutharika’s proven leadership as a major factor in his decision.

The DPP has not yet responded to the letter, and Mutharika’s absence continues to raise questions among supporters and political observers.
