The Mulanje Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to four women accused of assaulting their sister-in-law, Dorica Amos, leaving her seriously injured.
The women, represented by James Chiundira of Legal Aid, had applied for bail on grounds that they are Malawians with fixed abodes. Chiundira further argued that one of the women is three months pregnant, while the others have children and families to care for, stressing that bail is a constitutional right for all accused persons.
However, Magistrate Aaron Ng’ambi dismissed the application, stating that evidence presented by the State and procedural irregularities in the case suggested that releasing the suspects could delay proceedings and risk their failure to appear in court.
Ng’ambi has set September 10, 2025 as the date when the four will take plea. In the meantime, the suspects have been remanded at Mulanje Prison.
According to police records, Dorica Amos was allegedly attacked on June 23, 2025 by the four women, following a disagreement over another woman married to their brother. She sustained severe spinal injuries during the assault.
Medical reports indicate that Dorica is currently unable to walk and has been advised to use a wheelchair. She remains in great pain as she recovers.
