The 2025 Presidential Debates Task Force has confirmed that the scheduled debates will go ahead despite the withdrawal of two major political parties, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Task Force Chairperson Golden Matonga said the debates, set to run from August 21 to September 4, 2025, remain a crucial platform for presidential candidates to present their visions and policies to the public.
Matonga emphasized that while participation is voluntary, the debates serve as a vital democratic duty, offering citizens an opportunity to make informed choices. He warned that non-participation may be viewed as denying voters the chance to hold leaders accountable.
However, MCP Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila announced that President Lazarus Chakwera, the party’s presidential candidate, will not take part. Kabwila said the decision was due to “a lack of transparency and inclusiveness in the consultative process during the preparations.”
“We strongly support initiatives such as presidential debates, but such a pivotal exercise in the electoral calendar requires a transparent and consultative process to give it credibility and trust,” Kabwila said in her statement. She added that while Dr. Chakwera will not attend, the MCP remains committed to engaging voters through other inclusive platforms as the September 16 General Election approaches.
Meanwhile, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba confirmed via Facebook that party leader Peter Mutharika will also not participate in the debates.
Despite the two withdrawals, the Presidential Debates Task Force maintains that the debates will proceed as planned, with Matonga urging all leaders to embrace the platform as part of their accountability to Malawians.
