Early this morning, kabaza riders in Ndirande staged a protest at Ndirande Police Station following a dispute that escalated when a police officer allegedly shot at a kabaza carrying two passengers while trying to pass through the Makhetha area without permission.
Charles Wildon, chairperson of the Ndirande market transport association, told media that the incident happened around 6 pm on Thursday when the police officer opened fire on the kabaza operator who refused to stop for a checkpoint.
Following the shooting, all three people on the kabaza were injured and are now receiving treatment at the central hospital in the city.
So far, Southern Region Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa and Ndirande Police spokesperson Chibisa Mulimbika have said they are still investigating the matter and will release a statement once more information is available.
