25-Year-Old Nabbed for Vandalizing Waterboard Meters in Mzuzu

Mzuzu Police have arrested 25-year-old Lazalo Nyirenda for stealing and damaging Northern Region Waterboard meters in various townships in the city.

Nyirenda was arrested on August 21, 2025, at Luwinga Market, where he was selling four stolen water meters.

Within August 2025, four waterboard meters were vandalized and stolen from Chibavi and Luwinga townships, prompting residents to report the incidents to Chibavi and Luwinga Police units.

Following an intelligence-driven operation, detectives tracked down Nyirenda and recovered the stolen meters. He confessed to the crime and led police and waterboard officers to the houses where he removed the meters and damaged pipes. The stolen properties are valued at K5,000,000.00.

Nyirenda, from Chibavi Village, Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba District, will face court charges of theft and malicious damage after completing the necessary paperwork.
