The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, completed their two-match friendly series against Lesotho in style, securing a second consecutive 3-0 victory at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday, 31 August 2025.

Star striker Asimenye Simwaka stole the spotlight with a brilliant hat-trick. She opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, connecting with a corner from captain Sabina Thom, before heading home twice in the second half — the first assisted again by Thom and the second by Ireen Khumalo.

Head Coach Lovemore Fazili hailed the result but admitted Lesotho had tested his side early on.

“These two matches mean a lot. Most players have shown heart and improvement that they can deliver for the team. We believe we will have a good game against Angola in the WAFCON qualifiers,” he said.

Fazili also praised the impact of new players introduced across both games, particularly midfielder Funny Moyo, whose second-half cameo changed the tempo.

“I am very happy that we have a squad with many players who are doing well. Some international players don’t always come for COSAFA, so the performance of the girls has given us confidence,” Fazili added.

The result mirrored Friday’s first clash, where Simwaka scored a brace and Thom added another goal for another 3-0 win.

The two friendlies are part of Malawi’s preparations for the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Championship and their crucial WAFCON qualifiers against Angola in October.
