A 40-year-old man, Paul Simenti, from Sabola Village under Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje District, drowned earlier today in the Shire River at Mtayamoyo Dock.

The incident was confirmed by Nsanje Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma.

According to police, the report was made by the deceased’s younger brother, 35-year-old Harrison Simenti.

Paul, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time, attempted to cross the river by canoe, but operators refused him due to his condition.

Determined to get across, he entered the water and tried to swim, but sadly became exhausted and drowned.

Law enforcement officers have since arrived at the scene to conduct further investigations.
