The Catholic University of Malawi is in mourning following the death of second-year nursing student Rosemary Lomomiwa, who is reported to have taken her own life on Monday night, just hours after celebrating her birthday.

The university confirmed the tragic incident in an official statement titled “Death Announcement,” identifying the deceased as Ms. Rosemary Lomoliwa (BScNM/NE/2024/2545), a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery.

Although no official cause of death has been released by authorities, close friends and preliminary reports suggest the suicide may be linked to romantic difficulties. It is alleged that Lomoliwa ended her life after discovering that her boyfriend was involved with another student on the same campus.

It is reported that this was not her first attempt; friends revealed that she had previously tried to take her own life but was intervened and saved by colleagues.

The university’s statement read: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Ms. Rosemary Lomoliwa… May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.”

Her burial is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in her home district of Mulanje, near Mloza Border.

The Catholic University community has been urged to keep the bereaved family in prayer as they come to terms with the loss.

Student counselling services have been made available on campus for those affected by the tragedy.

Rosemary Lomoliwa aged 23, hailed from Chisitu Village in Mulanje District.
