US Rapper Cardi B has been found not liable in a civil assault and battery case brought against her by Emani Ellis, a former security guard who alleged the star attacked her during a 2018 incident.
Ellis claimed Cardi B hit her, spit on her, hurled racial slurs, and cut her face with a long fingernail injuries she said required plastic surgery. She sought $24 million in damages.
However, after a trial in L.A. County, a unanimous jury ruled in Cardi B’s favor, clearing her of all allegations. The rapper will not be required to pay any damages.
Speaking after the verdict, Cardi B said:
“I work all day and I work hard for my money, for my kids, for the people that I take care of. So don’t you ever think that you’re going to sue me, and I’m just going to settle.”
She also vowed to countersue anyone who files what she described as “nefarious” lawsuits against her in the future.
During testimony, Cardi denied ever touching Ellis, insisting the confrontation was only verbal. She told the court Ellis had been recording her doctor’s visit while she was pregnant with her first child. Both Cardi’s doctor and receptionist backed up her account, testifying that they never saw the rapper strike Ellis.
Ellis, meanwhile, maintained her version of events in court and testified that Cardi sliced open her left cheek with a fingernail. After the ruling, Ellis told reporters she wasn’t disappointed, saying she was glad to have had her day in court. Her lawyer announced plans to appeal the decision.
Cardi B, who appeared in court multiple times during the trial dressed in glamorous outfits and jewelry, consistently called the lawsuit a “cash grab.”
