The High Court in Lilongwe has rejected Annie Debra Mumba’s application for bail while her appeal is pending.

Mumba was previously convicted and sentenced to 53 years in prison for the murder of her husband, Professor Peter Mumba.

In a ruling made on 28th July 2025, Justice Mzonde Mvula stated there are no exceptional or unusual circumstances that justify her release on bail. The court emphasized that bail pending appeal is only granted in exceptional cases, where the applicant can show a strong prospect of success or that the sentence will be largely served before the appeal is concluded.

Justice Mvula found that Mumba’s appeal lacks merit and noted that she has not yet served a significant portion of her sentence. Consequently, Mumba will remain in custody while her appeal proceeds.
