MEC Suspends Local Council Elections Following Deaths of Several Candidates

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended upcoming local council elections in several wards following the deaths of multiple candidates who were vying for council positions.

According to MEC spokesperson  the affected wards include:

Chilobwe Ward, Lilongwe – where Mandaachepa Kamwendo (MCP) passed away.

Msitu Ward, Mchinji – Edson Josiah (MCP) died.

Mikongo Ward, Mangochi – Allan Jemusi (MCP) passed away.

Luwinga Ward, Mzuzu – Isaac Henry Singini (UDF) died.

Chirunga Ward, Zomba – Abraham Nyondo (Liberation for Economic Freedom) also passed away, although MEC has not yet released an official statement on his death.

MEC confirmed that elections in these areas will be temporarily halted to address the situation, while mourning the loss of the candidates.
