President Lazarus Chakwera has apologized to Malawians over the persistent fuel shortages, attributing the crisis to what he called “deliberate sabotage” by officials within the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma).
In a national address delivered this evening from Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, Chakwera claimed that some Nocma officials deliberately frustrated the timely importation of fuel in order to weaken his administration and benefit from kickbacks.
“Ordinary motorists have been caught in the crossfire of a war. I am fighting corrupt cartels and a political opposition party working with them,” he said, without naming the party.
The President vowed to dismiss the implicated officials at Nocma if he secures re-election in next Tuesday’s presidential poll.
Chakwera also announced revised fertiliser prices, saying that under the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP), a 50kg bag will now cost K15,000 for smallholder farmers, while those purchasing for commercial purposes will pay K90,000 per bag from October 1, 2025.
He accused “crooked businesspersons” of colluding with opposition politicians to push fertiliser prices to K160,000 per bag, but insisted: “They will not win this fight. I will continue to fight for poor farmers in this country.”
