Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested two suspects in connection with the death of Alick Chipeta which occured on September 10, 2025 at around 04:30 hours at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Adam Chipeta 26, of Mtambo Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Timbiri in the district that his father Alick Chipeta was heavily assaulted by the angry mob when he was apprehended by the community.
It has been established that Stonard Longwe 21 and his brother Lumbani Longwe 41 together with other villagers allegedly assaulted Chipeta (now deceased) for suspecting him of stealing Ginger from Stonard’s farm.
Police officers from Nkhata Bay Police Station rushed to the scene and rescued the suspect.
The law enforcers immediately took him to the district hospital where he was treated as an outpatient.
However, in the morning hours of September 10, 2025, the suspect reported that he was feeling unwell whilst in custody and was rushed to the hospital again where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A postmortem examination conducted by medical personnel at the facility revealed that the cause of death was due to neurogenic shock secondary to traumatic assault.
Meanwhile, Stonard Longwe and Lumbani Longwe are currently in police custody and will soon appear before court to answer the charge of murder.
Both Stonard and Lumbani hail from Kapalapata Village,TA Timbiri in the district.
