Police in Nkhata Bay District have arrested two brothers in connection with the death of Alick Chipeta, who was reportedly beaten after being suspected of stealing ginger from their garden.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Devoter Mithi identified the suspects as 21-year-old Stonard Longwe and 41-year-old Lumbani Longwe. According to authorities, the brothers, along with other villagers, allegedly assaulted Chipeta over the alleged theft of ginger from Stonard Longwe’s farm.

“Police rushed him to the clinic for medical attention, but he was unresponsive. He was later taken to the government hospital where he died,” Mithi said.

The brothers are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of murder. Both hail from Kapalapata Village, T/A Timbiri, in Nkhata Bay District.
