Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Chief Executive Officer, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, has assured Malawians that there will be no power blackouts for four days during the election period to ensure smooth vote counting.
Speaking at a press briefing, Kumwenda said the task of tallying election results is of national importance, hence the corporation has made special arrangements to maintain uninterrupted power supply.
He disclosed that Escom requested other industries and companies to temporarily suspend some of their operations to ease the pressure on the national grid. However, he admitted that some companies have resisted the request.
“Despite this, Escom will still ensure the plan is implemented,” Kumwenda emphasized.
He further noted that the country’s persistent power outages are expected to ease once Malawi begins importing additional electricity from Mozambique.
