Police nab two men for motorcycle theft in Mzuzu

Police in Mzuzu on Thursday apprehended Sharifu Mussa 26 and Matias Maxwell Banda 37 for stealing a motorcycle after drugging it’s rider through soft drink.
The incident took place on September 17, 2025 at Phoka in Rumphi District.
Police preliminary inquiries established that the two suspects hired a motorcycle operator (kabanza) from Rumphi Boma to take them to Phoka area in the same district.
Along the way, the two fished out from their bag soft drinks which they shared with the rider identified as Mleza Zgambo 25 if Kaiwale Village Traditional Authority (TA) Chikulamayembe in the same district.
Some minutes later upon taking the drink, the rider started feeling uncomfortable and was sweating profusely that he couldn’t ride anymore.
The suspects pretended to help and took him to Lura Health Center for treatment.
They left him receiving treatment and went away with his King Lion motorcycle.
The two were spotted at Paris drinking joint in Mzuzu Thursday morning with the stolen motorbike by well wishers who tipped the police in the city.
The law enforcers acted with speed, arrested the two and recovered the stolen motorbike.
The suspects will be handed over to the police in Rumphi where the crime was committed to answer appropriate charges.
They both hail from Chiyendausiku Village TA Chiyendausiku in Balaka.
