The High Court in Kabwe will today hear a case to decide if popular Zambian farmer and businesswoman Maria Zaloumis, known as the “ZedFarmer”, is being held in jail legally.

ZedFarmer, her partner, and three farm workers were arrested on August 24, 2025, after a man named Enock Simfukwe died. He had been caught on her farm with acid, which police say he planned to use to harm her.

The man was handed over to police but died five hours later while in custody. Despite this, Zaloumis and her team were charged with murder.

Her lawyers argue that keeping her in jail for so long without trial is unfair and against the law. Zaloumis has three children, including a one-year-old baby, and has been separated from them since her arrest.

Zaloumis is widely admired in Zambia for inspiring young people, especially girls, to see farming as a path to success.

The court’s decision today will not only affect her future but also highlight the importance of justice and fairness for everyone in Zambia.
