Former President Peter Mutharika is currently leading in the preliminary results of Malawi’s ongoing presidential election.

Unofficial reports indicate that Mutharika has secured approximately 53% of the votes, while incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera trails with about 35%.

While the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has yet to release official figures, Mutharika appears to be performing strongly in his traditional Southern Region strongholds.

President Chakwera, however, continues to show resilience, maintaining a solid voter base in the Central Region.

As vote counting continues across the country, political tension is growing.

MEC Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja has issued a stern warning to political parties against declaring early victories.

She emphasized that such conduct could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and create unnecessary panic among citizens.

The commission has until September 24th to officially announce the final results, in line with electoral law.

This year’s election features seventeen presidential candidates, making it one of the most competitive races in recent history.
