Hours after two candidates for the Mlanduni constituency formally requested a recount of parliamentary votes, another contender has followed suit.

Gerald Kampanikiza, a well-known social media influencer and parliamentary candidate for Dedza-Boma, has formally petitioned the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for a recount of votes in his constituency.

Kampanikiza alleges that the unofficial parliamentary results were manipulated in favor of another candidate. Initially he was firrst announced as losing the race by a certain Facebook page not MEC, Gerald Kampanikiza later publicly claimed that he had actually won the seat.

He was one of five candidates contesting as Shadow MPs in Dedza-Boma. The MEC has not yet responded to his request, but the commission has previously stated that all recount petitions will be evaluated according to electoral law.

Observers say that multiple recount requests across the country underscore ongoing tensions surrounding the parliamentary and presidential election results, highlighting the need for transparency in the tallying process.
