Blantyre turned into a sea of blue on Sunday night as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters celebrated what they described as an early victory for their leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, in the 2025 Tripartite Elections.
Although the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has not yet released the official results, DPP followers and some social media influencers have already declared Mutharika the winner, claiming he has dominated across several districts.
Videos and posts circulating online showed jubilant DPP supporters chanting and singing in Blantyre, convinced that their candidate had secured a comeback victory against Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera.
Adding to the wave of claims, UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, issued a public statement congratulating Mutharika on his “electoral victory.” In the statement, Kabambe called for peace, unity, and a peaceful transfer of power while also urging an independent inquiry into the death of the late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima.
Meanwhile, the MCP Yeasterday held a a press briefing themed “We Got This”, where senior party officials sought to reassure their supporters. Jessie Kabwila, speaking on behalf of MCP vice president Vitumbiko Mumba, told the gathering that the party remained confident and would soon provide updates from its leadership.
With celebrations on one side and reassurance rallies on the other, the nation now waits for MEC’s official announcement to determine Malawi’s next president.
