The High Court has dismissed an application by President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) seeking to stop the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from declaring the results of the September 16 presidential election.
Chakwera and the MCP had petitioned the court for an injunction and judicial review, accusing MEC of failing or refusing to address their complaints regarding alleged electoral irregularities in selected districts.
However, High Court Judge Howard Pemba rejected the request for an injunction, allowing MEC to proceed with the announcement and publication of the final election results.
Despite this, the court granted Chakwera and the MCP permission to commence judicial review proceedings concerning the handling of complaints from certain districts.
Judiciary spokesperson Ruth Mputeni confirmed the developments, stating that the matter will now proceed through the judicial review process.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will announce the winner of the presidential election today at 2 PM.
