Tanzania’s President Suluhu Congratulates President-Elect Peter Mutharika on Election Victory

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has extended her “heartfelt congratulations” to President-elect Arthur Peter Mutharika following his victory in Malawi’s September 16, 2025 general election.
In her congratulatory message issued today, President Suluhu expressed optimism about deepening bilateral cooperation between Tanzania and Malawi under Mutharika’s leadership.
“I commend His Excellency [outgoing] President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, the Malawi Congress Party, and the people of Malawi for a peaceful election and a smooth transition,” she said.
“I look forward to working together with President-elect Mutharika to strengthen the historic ties between our two neighbouring countries.”
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced yesterday that Mutharika, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), secured victory with 56.8% of the 5,347,757 valid votes cast. Outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera came second with 33%.
