A group of residents from Blantyre City’s Chichiri Misesa area on Thursday staged demonstrations protesting alleged fraudulent election results that declared Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Themba Mkandawire as the winner of the parliamentary seat.
The demonstrations, led by Francis Samuel Mtemang’ombe, involved people from villages including Chemboma, Likotima, Kafuma, Kanjanga, Cheladye, Kudzala, Mponda, Kayipa, Mandanda, Chilemba, Mtutire, Ndogolo, Kalungwe, Mzoma, Kapichi, Matalala, Buleya, Macheso, Chemoya, Mmadi, Chiwembe, Misesa, Kwale, Chabuka, Kanjedza, Federation, Nasingo, Chilomo, Chilole, Njambe, Malizani and Chendogolo.
Mtemang’ombe accused Mkandawire of engaging in electoral malpractice, alleging that he ferried people from outside the constituency to cast their votes in the area.
The protesters said they were heading to Blantyre City Council offices to present a petition demanding that fresh elections be conducted in the constituency.
The group started their march at Manje before proceeding through Kapeni and Manja roads on their way to the council offices.
