Ex-Police Officer, Accomplice Jailed 37 Months in Balaka for Possessing Police Items

In Balaka, former police officer Joseph Mafosha and his accomplice Steven Alfred have been sentenced to 37 months in jail for unlawfully possessing items supplied to police officers and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Balaka Police Spokesperson Inspector Gladson Mbumpha said that on August 8, 2025, the two were caught at a TNM Shop in Balaka with a butt of a teargas launcher, one handcuff, three tins of teargas, and one hand grenade items strictly supplied for police use.
When they appeared before court, the duo pleaded guilty to charges of possessing articles supplied to police officers and conspiracy to commit a felony, contrary to Section 151 and Section 404 of the Penal Code respectively.
On Friday, First Grade Magistrate Augustine Mizaya convicted and sentenced them to three months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for the first count, and 37 months IHL for the second count. The sentences will run concurrently.
Mafosha hails from Mwalala Village under Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi, while Alfred comes from Bwanali Village under Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
