Police in Lilongwe have arrested 30-year-old Dyson Sitolo on suspicion of stealing 15 million Kwacha from a businessman of Asian origin (Mwenye). Authorities have since recovered 9.9 million Kwacha of the stolen money.
According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Friday, last week. Sitolo and an accomplice—who is still on the run—allegedly attacked the businessman, who was riding a motorbike and carrying a bag containing the money from Deira Investment, where he works.
Chigalu said the suspects assaulted the businessman with metal bars before stealing the bag of money and his mobile phone. The victim reported the matter to Area 3 Police Station, which immediately launched an investigation.
Police managed to arrest Sitolo, also known as Rasta, and recovered part of the stolen money in his possession. During questioning, Sitolo revealed that he had given 5 million Kwacha to his accomplice who assisted in the robbery.
The police are continuing their investigation and are actively pursuing the second suspect.
