Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 30-year-old man, Norman Kambanje, for allegedly abusing a 17-year-old girl under the false pretense of performing a ritual to recover a stolen phone.
According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the incident occurred on September 14, 2025, in Mwenyekondo, Area 36.
It is reported that the girl’s mother, who lives in Thyolo, was informed that her stolen phone had been found by a witch doctor in Lilongwe. She then sent her daughter, who was already in Lilongwe, to meet the suspect.
The girl was later directed to meet the man, who allegedly threatened her and coerced her into going to a guesthouse, claiming the act was required to complete the ritual.
Police say the suspect misused this false claim to commit the offence multiple times during the night.
The following day, he reportedly told the girl that the ritual was not yet complete and pressured her to return.
The girl informed her mother, who immediately reported the matter to the police.
The suspect was arrested and is expected to be formally charged after investigations are completed.
