Malawian musician Samuel Kayira, popularly known as Smacks Music or Mr. Kodo, has once again taken to social media to speak out about his ongoing fight for his mother’s justice a battle that has lasted for years.
On October 12, the artist posted a heartfelt message on his Facebook page, accompanied by a photo of a cheque showing he had received K1.8 million from COSOMA in music royalties.
In his lengthy post, Smacks thanked his loyal fans for their continued support, acknowledging how difficult it is to stay relevant in today’s competitive music industry. He then went on to open up about the personal struggles that have kept him less active in music in recent years his mother’s unresolved compensation case.
According to Smacks, his mother was injured in 2017 while working for an estate company (name withheld), after being forced to perform her duties without proper protective gear. The injuries left her partially blind and unable to work, leading to her demotion and eventual eviction from the company’s house. Despite years of trying, she has never received any compensation.
Smacks and his siblings have since taken full responsibility for their mother’s care, including covering medical costs and supporting her daily needs. The artist explained that he has tried numerous legal channels to seek justice, even involving well-known lawyers such as the late Ralph Kasambara and others who offered free assistance but all efforts stalled.
At one point, his pursuit of justice led to a defamation lawsuit against him from the company’s manager, after he publicly shared details of his mother’s case on Facebook. Although that case was eventually dismissed, he was ordered to delete all related posts from social media.
Despite the setbacks, Smacks said he remains determined. He revealed that the case was reopened in 2022, but progress has been slow, with court hearings delayed repeatedly.
“My mother is still in the same condition, always on and off medication. We’re still waiting for the court to act. I feel helpless sometimes, but I won’t stop fighting,” he wrote.
The artist added that his recent return to active music is part of his effort to raise funds to continue supporting his mother and pushing for justice.
“Keep supporting my music, fam; it means a lot to me,” Smacks concluded.
