Some senior officials in the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have voiced their opinions following reports that President Arthur Peter Mutharika intends to swear in AFORD’s president, Hon. Enoch Chihana, as the country’s Second Vice President.

The development follows the President’s recent announcement that he would honor the campaign agreement made with Aford ahead of the September 16 elections.

In a Facebook post, Gerald Chavez Kampanika,  who was competing for MCP parliamentary seat for Dedza Boma Constituency, questioned whether it was necessary for Chihana to take up the vice presidency, arguing that the economy is already strained.

“Given the current state of our economy, should Mr. Chihana really be sworn in as Second Vice President while he is already serving as an MP and minister?” Kampanika wrote.

Meanwhile, Dickson Kashoti, one of MCP’s media strategists, described Chihana as merely “a lucky man,” suggesting that Aford contributed little to the DPP’s victory.

“Even without Chihana and Aford, President Professor Peter Mutharika would have won the elections resoundingly. Aford only won one parliamentary seat,” Kashoti said.

He added that Mutharika’s decision to offer Chihana the position of Second Vice President is simply out of respect for their political agreement, not because of Aford’s electoral impact.

“If I were the President, I would cancel the agreement and just offer Chihana a deputy ministerial post,” Kashoti added.

The remarks have stirred debate online, with many Malawians questioning whether the Second Vice Presidency remains relevant given the country’s economic challenges.
