Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested Boniface Mwandosya on suspicion of trafficking six Ethiopian illegal immigrants around Jenda in August this year.
According to MacFarlane Mseteka, Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police, the arrest follows ongoing investigations after Mwandosya fled the scene during the initial police operation that led to the arrest of the six illegal immigrants.
Mseteka said that in August, Mwandosya was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero from Mzuzu towards Lilongwe when he encountered a police checkpoint mounted by Jenda officers. In an attempt to avoid a search, he tried to turn around, prompting officers to act swiftly by firing at one of the rear tires of the vehicle.
Mwandosya abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot, leaving behind six Ethiopian nationals, believed to have entered Malawi illegally via the Songwe border using uncharted routes. Investigations established that Mwandosya had assisted in facilitating their entry.
After being on the run for over a month, Mwandosya was apprehended in Lilongwe yesterday where he was found hiding.
