Enock Kanzingeni Chihana has officially taken the oath of office as the Second Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.

The oath was administered by the Deputy Chief Justice, Lovemore Chikopa, during a swearing-in ceremony held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

Chihana becomes only the second person in Malawi’s history to occupy this position  the first being his late father, Chakufwa Chihana, who also served as the country’s Second Vice President during the Bakili Muluzi administration.

Before the September 16 General Election, Chihana’s party, the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), entered into an electoral alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which retained power in the polls.

His appointment is in line with Section 80(5) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, which provides for the appointment of a Second Vice President from another political party that participated in the elections.

During the same ceremony, Roza Fatch Mbirizi was sworn in as Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Water Development, while Dr. George Partridge took the oath as Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade, and Tourism. Their oaths were administered by the Chief Registrar of the High Court, Innocent Nebi.

The event was attended by senior government officials, cabinet ministers, and party representatives.
