Parliament will this afternoon hold elections to choose the Speaker, First Deputy Speaker, and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has nominated Sameer Suleman for the position of Speaker, with Victor Musowa as its candidate for First Deputy Speaker and Esther Jolobala of the United Democratic Front (UDF) for Second Deputy Speaker.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has fielded Peter Dimba for Speaker and Chambulanyina Jere for Second Deputy Speaker, urging independent legislators to support its candidates in the vote.
Kondwani Nankhumwa of People’s Development Party (PDP) and George Million, an independent candidate, have also joined the Speaker’s race, while Catherine Nzumara, of United Transformation Movement (UTM), is contesting for the position of First Deputy Speaker.
Members of Parliament are expected to convene at 2 p.m. to elect the new presiding officers, a process that will shape the leadership and direction of the next parliamentary term.
