Court Sentences Young Man to 48 Months in Prison for Attempted Defilement in Thyolo

The Thyolo District Court has sentenced Clement Mayenda, 20, to 48 months in prison for attempting to sexually assault a young woman.
The ruling was delivered on 17 October 2025, after Mayenda accompanied the victim to a location but failed to follow the proper route to her home.
Upon arriving in a forested area, Mayenda struggled with the woman in an attempt to assault her. Fortunately, nearby community members came to her aid and restrained the suspect.
The prosecution, represented by Jafali Wemusi, asked the court to impose a severe sentence, given the seriousness of the offence.
In his judgment, Judge Kondwani Chinangwa noted that while this was Mayenda’s first offence, the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others.
